CarrefourSA Stores Generate Their Own Energy

|

Sabancı Holding and Carrefour's joint venture, CarrefourSA, established a rooftop Solar Power Plant (SPP) with a capacity of 620 kWp at the İstinye Hypermarket in collaboration with İklimsa as part of its sustainability goals. This system will meet 45% of the store’s annual energy needs and prevent the emission of 374.8 tons of carbon.

With nearly 1,200 stores in 67 cities and a workforce of 15,000 people, including franchisees, CarrefourSA continues to offer the right products from reliable producers at the most competitive prices and services to its customers. Prioritizing sustainability and energy efficiency with the motto The Right Ones Are at CarrefourSA, CarrefourSA is determined to continue investing in renewable energy. Through the rooftop Solar Power Plant (SPP) project at the İstinye Hypermarket, launched in collaboration with İklimsa, CarrefourSA is leading the energy transformation in the organized food retail sector.

CarrefourSA Executive Committee Member Bulut Batum, emphasizing their commitment to financial practices while contributing to an eco-friendly future, said: "We are continuously implementing projects to increase energy efficiency at all our locations. Through these projects, we not only reduce our energy consumption but also fulfill our responsibility to the environment by sourcing the energy we need from renewable sources. Solar energy today holds great potential both in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Considering the high energy demands of the retail sector, we will continue investing in solar energy."

“Meeting 45% of the store’s annual energy needs

According to the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources’ Solar Energy Potential Atlas, Turkey has an average annual sunlight duration of 2,741 hours and a total annual heating value of 1,527.46 kWh per square meter. Batum continued, "With this project, realized in partnership with İklimsa, we are fully focused on utilizing our renewable energy resources for the right cause. The rooftop SPP project we implemented at our İstinye CarrefourSA Hypermarket has a capacity of 620 kWp and is designed to meet 45% of the store's annual energy needs. This level of energy production is equivalent to the annual energy needs of 187 households. It will also prevent the emission of 374.8 tons of carbon. By using a total of 1,113 high-efficiency panels, we achieved the most ideal placement and maximized our energy efficiency using the latest technologies.”

Reducing energy costs through SPP investments

Batum also said that they will continue investing in this area, "The world is rapidly changing, and this change requires us to adopt a nature-compatible approach. Since 2020, we have opened 59 charging stations, serving over 20,000 vehicles, laying the foundations for an environmentally friendly transportation infrastructure. As we expand these investments by turning our store parking lots into charging points, we have also prevented 23,153 tons of CO2e emissions, 12,000 cubic meters of water consumption, and 40,000 MWh of electricity usage in 2023 through energy efficiency projects. The 40 million kWh energy savings achieved in 485 stores is a key indicator of this process. By implementing similar projects in all our stores, we aim to save more than 60 million kWh of energy annually. Currently, our total annual energy consumption across all business processes is approximately 180 million kWh. This is a significant amount that needs to be saved. Therefore, by accelerating our solar energy investments in 2025, we will not only reduce our energy costs but also promote the use of renewable energy.”

We at İklimsa are committed to our shared future.”

Tansu Öztorun, Executive Committee Member of Teknosa and Deputy General Manager of İklimsa Business Unit, made a statement about the topic: “At İklimsa, we are committed to our shared future. As the pioneering brand of Teknosa with its dealer and service network, we are expanding our renewable energy solutions that will add value to the world under the vision of 'New Generation Sabancı.' In terms of efficiency, interest in solar energy investments by industrialists and businesses is increasing day by day to reduce electricity consumption costs, avoid future energy price hikes, and become more competitive both nationally and internationally. While the payback period of these investments initially took up to 15 years, it has now decreased to as little as 4 years. Considering the 25-year economic lifespan of SPPs, businesses can use the energy they produce for up to 21 years in their own facilities and homes or sell the surplus to generate revenue. With over 500 authorized dealers and service centers in 71 cities, we provide a wide range of services in Solar Power Systems, offering corporate and individual solutions for housing projects as well as rooftop and land applications of all capacities. With our organizational structure, the end-to-end services we offer, and our ability to produce customized projects to meet needs, we operate with the commitment to providing the most ambitious service in the SPP sector without compromising on quality. After installing solar power systems, we meet customer needs with monthly production reports, maintenance and repairs, regular panel cleaning, and spare product services. With 40 years of experience in the climate control sector, İklimsa is confidently moving forward to become the most preferred brand in the renewable energy industry. In this context, the rooftop solar power plant established at CarrefourSA's İstinye Hypermarket in collaboration with İklimsa was planned to meet 45% of the store’s energy needs. The clean energy obtained from the solar panels will be used in the store’s daily operations, significantly reducing carbon emissions. We hope this project, implemented in the organized food retail sector, will set a precedent for renewable energy investments and inspire other brands and stores.”
